Where it is

In the belly of the masseter, one finger-width above the angle of the jaw. Clench gently and the muscle stands up.

Nearby: Jaw muscle and the parotid region. Don’t press into the throat.

Traditionally said to

The usual local point for jaw clenching and toothache referred along the jaw. Tooth infection still needs a dentist.

What people look up

Acupressure

Find the muscle by a soft clench, then relax and press for 30–60 seconds.

When not to press: Skip a locked jaw, swelling, or tooth pain with fever.

About 30–90 seconds is the usual window, unless the step above is shorter. Stop if pain, dizziness, or anything unusual shows up.

Licensed practice only

Needle depth, angle, electroacupuncture

Textbook language for students. Not instructions. A cun is a body-inch on that person, not a ruler inch. Do not needle yourself.

Depth

Common textbook range: about 0.3–0.5 cun perpendicular, or transverse toward ST4.

Angle

Perpendicular into the masseter, or transverse toward the corner of the mouth.

Electroacupuncture

Introductory charts rarely assign a standard electroacupuncture setting here. Clinics that use current choose frequency and intensity for that person. No milliamp figure is given, because copying one would be misleading.
