Traditional uses

Transforms phlegm, directs rebellious stomach qi downward, and is the nausea herb in dozens of formulas. Preparation (ginger-processed and others) is part of the medicine. Raw herb is caustic.

Common pairings

  • Sheng Jiang 生姜

Ginger is both a partner for nausea and part of how the tradition reduces Ban Xia’s harshness.

  • Chen Pi 陈皮

The phlegm-and-qi pair of Er Chen Tang: one transforms phlegm, one moves qi so phlegm does not sit.

Cautions

Not for self-dosing. Toxic if raw or poorly prepared. Care in pregnancy. Do not forage it.
