Traditional uses
One of the three yellows. Texts use it for lung heat, stomach heat, and restless fetus patterns — the last only inside a prescribed formula, never as a self-chosen herb in pregnancy.
Common pairings
- Huang Lian 黄连
Two cold bitters. Qin is often aimed higher, Lian at the middle. Together they are very cooling.
- Chai Hu 柴胡
The shaoyang pair students memorize from Xiao Chai Hu Tang. Harmonizing, not a home mix.
Cautions
Not for self-dosing. Cold and bitter herbs injure the spleen if taken casually. Pregnancy use belongs only to a licensed prescriber.
